Hickleys: A Three-Generation Legacy

Spanning across three generations, Hickleys’ tale began in 1925 when Mr. H. N. Hickley established a battery service on Billet Street in Taunton. Concurrently, Mr. L. W. G. Meikle initiated a comparable venture in a garage tucked behind the Crown and Sceptre Inn on Station Road, Taunton. The year 1932 marked the union of these two enterprises, with Mr. Meikle becoming a partner to Mr. Hickley, expanding the team to four, including themselves.

As the thirties progressed, Hickleys broadened its offerings to include electrical repairs for automobiles and became a distributor of Lucas batteries and ignition systems, among other vehicle parts. By 1938, Hickleys was on the move with a Jowett two-cylinder van, delivering wholesale parts to clients in towns across Somerset. The close of the decade saw Mr. Hickley’s retirement and Mr. Leonard Meikle’s ascension as the proprietor. Shortly thereafter, in 1939/40, the company welcomed its second generation with Mr. John Meikle joining the ranks.
